Choosing a lace dress

Lining. Lace is open by nature. A dress lined to the hem can be worn anywhere; one lined only to the thigh, with sheer lace below, is an evening piece.

Colour. Lace in a single colour, lining and lace matching, looks the most formal. Lace over a contrasting lining makes the pattern the point of the dress.

Care. Lace catches on jewellery and zips. Hand wash cold, or use a laundry bag on a gentle cycle, and dry flat; never wring it.
