What to wear to the races
Check the enclosure. Many racecourses publish a dress code for each enclosure, and the most formal ones, such as the Royal Enclosure at Royal Ascot, are strict about hem length, straps and headwear. Read the code for your badge before you choose.
Length and straps. A dress that ends at the knee or below, with straps or sleeves, is accepted in almost every enclosure. Strapless, off-the-shoulder and very short dresses are the ones most often turned away, so this rail is chosen to avoid them; check the photographs against your enclosure's code.
Weather and ground. British race meetings are outdoors and the weather changes. A defined waist and a fuller skirt move well in wind; wear block heels on grass and carry a jacket that suits the dress.
The hat. Choose the dress first, then the hat or fascinator, and keep one of the two plain.
